Forthcoming Field Trip.
Sat. 21st June & Sun. 22nd June 2008
Joint IGA/CGA field trip to the Mullet Peninsula, Co. Mayo
Leader: Dr. Julian Menuge (UCD)
This excursion will take us to the Mullet Peninsula and adjacent parts of Erris in North Mayo, one of the wildest and most sparsely populated parts of Ireland. Almost all the rocks here are Precambrian and the area includes some of Ireland's oldest rocks, the Annagh Gneiss Complex. There are also metasedimentary rocks, which have been the cause of much argument over the years.
There are many questions to answer here. How old are the rocks of the Annagh Complex? What were they before they became gneisses? When did they become gneisses? How do they relate to the Annagh Gneiss Complex? We will look at some of the field ocalities where answers to these questions have been found - and decide whether the answers are right or wrong. Apart fron the rocks, we can enjoy the scenic delights of the area and there is the possibility of a visit to the Céide Fields, a Neolitic field system buried beneath the
blanket bog.
